The AG is interested in olfactory processing in insects. This area of sensory perception is called olfaction.
Our model organism is Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) and recently also Dorosphila suzukii (cherry vinegar fly). We are interested in different questions; among others, we want to know how odorants are recognized and interpreted. Why are some scents attractive to the animals and some not.
In this context, it is interesting to note that the human nose functions biochemically in the same way as the "nose" of insects.
We are also trying to generate a technical application that could be used to detect carbon dioxide in the future.
Drosophila serves primarily as a model system to study neuronal diseases. In this context, we are interested in neuronal degeneration in the olfactory system of the fruit fly.
